Rules pertaining to boreholes and wellpoints in the larger Cape Town area
Boreholes and wellpoints have become particularly attractive facilities in the current severe drought in the larger Cape Town region. But, as the City of Cape Town municipality (‘CCT) warns, boreholes and wellpoints do pose a risk to the municipal drinking water supply system and may have an impact on the environment. They are therefore regulated and monitored.
If you intend sinking a borehole or wellpoint, you must apply for approval to the CCT at least 14 days beforehand and after installation, the borehole must be registered with the CCT.

The water restriction guidelines require borehole and wellpoint owners to display appropriate signage outside their properties. Similarly, signage is required where grey water systems are in operation.
