18 Smart Fixes for Home Problems

Category Home Owner Tips

Not every household problem needs to take up a lot of time and energy. Make life easier at home with these 18 quick and easy fixes.

1. Don't toss out old socks. If you use them as wipes for dry mops you’ll be able to save money on expensive mop replacement pads.

2. Repurpose cold drink can tabs to free up space in your closet. Simply thread a can tab through a coat hanger hook and attach a second hanger onto the tab so that the hangers overlap each other. Now you have double the room to hang your items.

3. Generally showers are small and often lack the space to store bath related items. Create extra storage by using the shower rail, some curtain clips or handy storage pockets.

Link the shower curtain clips onto the rail and use them as storage. If you’re using clips, you can clip various beauty products onto the rail where they’ll be easy to access.

If you don't have a shower curtain, you can use an extendable rod.

4. Bulldog clips are perfect for tidying up cords and cables. Secure the clips to a desk edge and thread through the cables.

5. Keep your closet or linen cupboard organised simply by slipping duvets and sheets inside matching pillowcases. This way you can easily find what you’re looking for.

6. If not managed correctly, under sink storage can become a disorganised mess. You can tidy up and organise this space using a chrome or PVC rod and brackets to hang spray bottles, or use curtain brackets to mount rods for refuse bags.

7. Another area that quickly becomes disorganised is a makeup drawer. But you can quite easily organise this space by using ice cube trays or small baskets.

8. Apply a coat of clear nail polish on screws to keep them from coming loose. The nail polish helps keep screws securely fastened in place.

9. Looking for a way to organise and display your scarves? Find a scrap piece of wood and glue on some pegs to create an instant scarf rack.

10. Take the ache out of drying your hair by repurposing a flexible lamp into a hair dryer holder. Use epoxy adhesive to secure the lamp base onto a mirror or wall, and fasten the dryer onto the end of the lamp arm.

11. Warm up your home by adding backing to curtains. This works just as well if you work night shift and need to make blockout curtains.

To achieve this, simply use velcro tape to attach a layer of fabric to the back of existing curtains.

12. Baskets are perfect for corralling clutter, especially in a bathroom. Fasten these to cabinet sides, walls or even on the back of a door.

13. If your kiddies struggle to reach the tap, cut a hole in the underside of an empty plastic bottle and fit this over the tap. This will redirect the water and make it easier for washing hands.

14. Put PVC offcuts to good use. Organise your hair tools and accessories using the PVC pipes, which can be glued onto cabinet doors using 5-minute epoxy glue. Once in place, you can slot curling irons and other accessories into these homemade storage systems.

15. Don't waste your time using a lint roller to remove pet hair from furniture. It's far easier to pop on a pair of rubber gloves to make large clumps that can be sucked up with a vacuum cleaner.

16. Recycle plastic milk containers and turn them into watering cans (bottles). This is a fun way for the kids to get involved in gardening too.

17. Use velcro strips to organise toys and games. Glue one part of the velcro to a Playstation remote and the other to the side of a cabinet. Once your kids are done playing, simply stick the remote to the wall.

18. Store more shoes in your closet by organising them back to front. By placing shoes in the opposite direction, you can easily fit a single pair of shoes into a small space.
