Hermanus at a glance
Hermanus, nestled along Walker Bay on the southern coast of South Africa's Western Cape Province, has transformed from a quaint fishing village into a vibrant, rapidly growing town. Known as the "Whale Watching Capital of the World" between July and December, it offers a unique blend of natural beauty, robust infrastructure, and a relaxed coastal lifestyle, making it an increasingly popular destination for permanent residents, holidaymakers, and investors alike.
- History
Between 65 000 and 85 000 years ago, Middle Stone Age people first lived in the Klipgat Cave (on Hoy's Koppie above Hermanus). They left remains of their food, fires, and stone tools. Klipgat has also revealed some of the oldest pottery found in South Africa. The 2 000-year-old pieces of pottery were left by San hunter-gatherers. There are also rock paintings and caves to be found at Die Kelders (The Caves) on the southeast side of Walker Bay, in Gansbaai. The other cave at Sopie's Klip on Die Plaat, was also a shelter that has accommodated centuries of humanity.
Hermanus was originally named Hermanuspietersfontein after Hermanus Pieters, (ca.1778-1837), a teacher who arrived in Cape Town in 1815 to teach Dutch to farmers in Caledon and the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, and who "discovered" the area in the 1820s. Pieters spent his summer months herding cattle from Caledon along an elephant trail through the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley down to the coast, where he found good grazing and a fresh water spring. Eventually the rest of the farming community followed, and it became the new spot for the school holidays.
Fishermen also began settling around the small natural harbour during the 1850's, drawn by the abundant fish in Walker Bay. By 1886 so many families had moved to Hermanuspietersfontein that a church and school were built.
The adjacent Hemel-en-Aarde Valley (meaning Heaven and Earth) received its name from a Moravian missionary in 1899, who said that due to the high hills which closely embrace the valley all round, it seems to touch the sky, and you cannot see anything but heaven and earth.
Hermanus was such a beautiful town filled with fresh sea air that it was common for doctors to recommend a trip to the seaside town for their patient's health. In the late 1800's the Harley Street Doctors of London discovered Hermanus as an excellent place for people with consumption (TB) to recuperate. By the 1920's there were approximately 15 Sanatoria in Hermanus to cater for these well-heeled, early (medical) tourists.
In the early 1900's, when the very first erven were laid out by the Surveyor General of the time, taking care to include the existing fishermen's cottages in an orderly fashion. The name Hermanuspietersfontein was shortened in 1902 due to its length after complaints by an irate postmaster. Hermanus officially acquired municipal status in 1904. Hermanus's development was slightly altered because Sir William Hoy, the general manager of the railways at the time, was able to halt the railway line at Botrivier. As an avid fisherman, he wanted Hermanus to remain a peaceful coastal town. This decision created the ideal circumstances for establishing a magnetic observatory, which is now the South African National Space Agency. It also made Hermanus the only town to have a station but no train. In 1912, the station was transformed into the first Road Motor Transport depot and won various awards for being the "Neatest and Most Well-Run Station" over the years. The building now houses the Tourism Information Office.
Hermanus's reputation as a health retreat grew, and the town's sanatoriums gradually transformed into hotels. Before World War II, a thriving international tourist trade saw wealthy Englishmen escaping the harsh European winters to stay for months at a time. Hotels even sent buses to Cape Town to collect guests from mail ships.
Following the war, many of these tourists settled in Hermanus, buying or building their own homes. The town flourished in the 1950s and 60s, becoming a prime destination for people across the Western Cape. With 15 to 16 hotels providing entertainment and music, Hermanus was a vibrant social hub. Initially an ideal spot for summer grazing and fishing, it quickly became a sought-after holiday destination for city-dwellers.
For years, the municipality received complaints about the smell of fish offal at the old harbour where loads of fish were landed and cleaned. In 1932, it was finally decided that a new harbour had to be built to accommodate the fishing trade. Construction on the new harbour began in 1939 but was only finished in 1951 due to the Second World War. In 1972, the Old Harbor area was proclaimed an open-air museum, recognizing its historical significance. This also fit in well with the local tourism industry, which had long since replaced fishing as the lifeblood of Hermanus.
Over time, Hermanus has also fostered a rich cultural ambience, attracted writers and painters, and established itself as a bohemian mecca.

Unlike many coastal towns dominated by holiday homes, more than two-thirds of Hermanus' population are permanent residents. The neighbouring Hemel-en-Aarde (Heaven-and-Earth) Valley's wine route with 31 wineries, is renowned for producing some of South Africa's finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines, fruits, vegetables, and herbs, contributing to the region's agricultural and culinary appeal.
