The little town of Graafwater lies halfway between Clanwilliam and Lamberts Bay, about 300 km from Cape Town. It lies in the northern reaches of the Sandveld – a vast, sparsely populated area between the West Coast and the Swartland and adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean. Graafwater has a wide range of accommodation options available from Guest Houses, Bed and Breakfast and Self-catering units. Wild-flower blossoms in the region from late July to September. Activities in and around this area include bird watching and hiking. Graafwater has a thriving small business community, mainly targeted to the tourism industry.

Other than Leipoldtville, and Klawer further north, Graafwater is the only village to be found miles aways – this is characteristic of an area where towns are spread far and wide, each surrounded by huge expanses of veld filled with magnificent fynbos, thick stands of indigenous vegetation, hardy bushes and reeds and, in spring, a tapestry of wild flowers.

The picture created is an antagonistic to farming. Low rainfall and poor sandy soil means that the most of the farms in the area breed sheep and cattle. The Sandveld also does well for bee farmers, potatoes (the area around Redelinghuys and the Verlorenvallei is called the 'potato store' of the Western Cape), sunflowers and even some wheat on the farms closest to the Swartland.
