Strand North at a glance

While the high-altitude suburbs of Somerset West offer secluded mountain and sea views, Strand North offers something arguably more tactile: the "Golden Mile" of Melkbaai Beach and a lifestyle defined by the ebb and flow of False Bay. It is the suburb of choice for active families, retirees, and professionals who prioritize being within walking distance of one of the safest swimming beaches in the country.

Characterized by a mix of charming mid-century family homes on generous plots and sleek, modern apartment blocks lining the coast, the area exudes a relaxed, "vacation-at-home" energy. It is a neighbourhood where the salt air is a permanent resident and the community is anchored by a shared love for the outdoors.

  • Location: Strand North occupies a prime coastal strip, bordered by the Lourens River to the west and extending towards the commercial pulse of Strand's Main Road to the east. It sits perfectly positioned between the False Bay shoreline and Broadway Boulevard, acting as the gateway between Strand and the rest of the Helderberg (Somerset West and Gordon's Bay).
  • Accessibility: It is arguably the best-connected coastal pocket in the region. A 5-minute drive takes you to Broadway Boulevard which becomes the R44 (the main artery of the Cape Winelands). The N2 is easily accessible, placing the Stellenbosch winelands and Cape Town International Airport within a 20-to-30-minute radius.

History of Strand North

The first settler in the Hottentots Holland Strand area was a Huguenot, named David du Buisson, who farmed in the area, on a farm named Vlooibaai (later called Mostertsbaai belonging to the Morkel family). The history of Strand North is inextricably linked to the evolution of Strand from a humble fishing outpost in 1714 (originally Hottentots-Holland Strand) into a premier holiday and residential destination.

During the late 1700s, a large portion, Voorburg plus Mosterts Baay Strand was hived off for Willem Morkel. Strand North developed between Mosterts Baai farm and the Lourensrivier.

The establishment of the de Beers Dynamite Factory in 1902 (today the newly mixed-use node, Paardevlei Precinct), was a major boost to the growth of Strand. De Beers provided housing to its workers, and today many of these houses are still recognizable in especially the section of Strand North between Joubert Street and Lourensrivier Street. In the mid-20th century, Strand North became the "it" spot for inland farmers and Cape Town residents to build their summer homes, leading to the eclectic architectural landscape seen today.

Unlike the historic Cape Dutch influence of the Cape Winelands, Strand North’s heritage is rooted in Art Deco touches and the "Golden Era" of South African coastal living. Over the last two decades, the suburb has undergone a significant facelift. The revitalization of the Strand Pavilion and the ongoing upgrade of the five kilometer sea wall and promenade have transformed the beachfront into a world-class recreational space, sparking a wave of modern renovations in the residential streets behind it.

Strand North Lifestyle Offerings

The lifestyle in Strand North is unapologetically active and fits well into the 15-minute city mould - where everything residents need in their daily life can be accessed within a 15-minute walk or bike ride. On any given morning, the promenade is a hive of activity: joggers, dog-walkers, and surfers heading towards the beach walk in the MPA (Marine Protected Area) at the Lourensrivier mouth or to "The Pipe" (a famous local surf break). It offers a rare "lock-up-and-go" convenience for apartment dwellers, alongside a traditional suburban upbringing for families in the leafy streets just a few blocks back.

The growth of a serious coffee offering along Beach Road, has seen not only "strandlopers" (beach walkers or joggers) frequenting an array of coffee bars, roasters and coffee carts, but also a growing group of remote work professionals.
