Bellville at a glance

Bellville:  Once a small village with limited property opportunities, called 12 Mile Stone, now a city of note (named 12 Mile Stone because of the distance from Cape Town - 20km).  In 1861 it was renamed Bellville after Mr Charles Davidson Bell - the surveyor general of Cape Town for the period 1848 to 1872.  Most of Bellville was divided into farms and the farmers worked together , forming a supporting system. To boost their fresh produce sales, a cannon was fired from the famous Tygerberg to announce ships arriving in Table Bay.  Once the further regions heard the cannon, they would fire a follow up to spread the news to even more far-reaching farms.  Therefore farmers from all over were able to sell their stock to travellers passing Cape Point.
