Brackenfell started out as a major road crossing and the township was established in 1913. The town was named after a fern that was very common in the area, the Bracken-fern. Henry George Walton purchased a section of the farm Kruispad in 1901 from Andries Brink and named the purchased section Brackenfell. The Brackenfell Estate Granite Company established their business on a section of this land and in 1904 a railway siding was built to serve the businesses. transport needs.
